Introduction to Darkroom Safety
It is vitally important that your time in the darkroom is safe and enjoyable.
Film and paper processing involves some potential exposure to chemicals but none of the ones you will be using is toxic. Some can cause skin irritation and in general it is best to avoid all contact. Gloves and aprons will be available if you would like to use them. You do not need to wear eye protection but you may choose to do so and this is available on request.
Working in the dark or in red light can be a little unsettling to begin with but most people get used to it very quickly. Darkrooms are generally not big and they can feel a bit crowded during courses. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, for any reason, the lessons can be stopped immediately and you will be allowed to step outside.
All activities have been risk assessed and appropriate mitigation has been put in place where necessary. First aid kits and eye wash are available at both campuses and, although retired, Rob has 30+ years experience of acute medical emergencies up to and including war surgery so you will have reasonable first aid on site.
If you have any particular concerns do please get in touch for a confidential discussion and we will find ways to ensure your comfort and safety.
